Ho da leggere anche The Age of Innocence e The Custom of the Country, gli altri due romanzi di New York: spero di ricredermi.

I went through several ups and downs with this book and especially Lily Bart herself, but ultimately I really enjoyed it.

I loved everything about this; the style, the language, the depth of each character, the plot etc etc. It even has my favourite quote ever, I discovered: "And for always getting what she wants in the long run, commend me to a nasty woman."

I can definitely see how this was monumental for its time; still, it never really grabbed me. Wharton's style is easy enough to read - a little rambling in parts, but easy enough. The emotional tug-of-war with Seldon is particularly frustrating and I'm not sure why he never makes anything of it. He acts like he doesn't care for society, but then when she is shunned, he is happy to let her stay there. Perhaps it is because he saw her with Trenner? It's possible I've missed/overlooked some things because, as I said, I wasn't fully engrossed in the story. Towards the end I felt like it was an American version of [b:Madame Bovary|19075|Madame Bovary|Gustave Flaubert|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1312499261s/19075.jpg|2766347]. Lily has more substance and values than Bovary, but the enlightenments about life and what's truly important and just the general state-of-mind reminded me of the French novel. (2009)
