2025 reread:
honestly 2024 me was HARSH cos i'd rate this higher.
i really loved this- patrick and damien are amazing, and i really loved their relationship- it was believable.
maybe the plot with adopting finley was less believable but it was cute u know?
also damien's poetry sucks but i love him nonetheless

On the one hand this book is soft and fluffy and given that I've read it in less than a day, certainly compelling.
However, it's also very heavy on the tell and does very little show. Developments get summarized, the reader is told about certain activities, but doesn't get to see them up close, you learn about certain conversations only in retrospect. At times it reads more like a report rather than a story. E.L Massey's other books had a tendency to do that at times, but the previous first volumes didn't exhibit it to the extent shown in this book. It felt very much like the author had some scenes in mind and just tried to find a way to connect them, summarizing things that she wasn't interested in detailing. Which is certainly a way you can go about writing. But being in a constant state of 'When did this happen? I was not told about this' creates a certain distance to both the story and the characters. It makes reading less experiencing a story and more consuming facts. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of that type of story telling.
Also, it's not a hockey book, really. Rome could be playing Football, Basketball or Rugby for what it's worth and it wouldn't change the story. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, depending on why you pick up the book.
