The play that introduced the world to the word robot is worth a read by any science fiction enthusiast, roboticist, literati, or just interested party. Not only does the play coin the term robot but it has apocalypse level consequences (mind you this is written well before the current fad) that result from an unrestrained desire for cheap labor, freedom from work, and idealism acted on without adequate considerations of the consequences. The play offers some insights into what makes us human, and its not what you might think.

Another book originally read for school. It's a real Czech classic. I had three main problems with this book even before I started reading it. First, this book is a play, and I do not enjoy reading plays. Second, it's a sci-fi, and I do not really enjoy sci-fi that much. Third, it's written by a Czech author, and I don't really enjoy many Czech writers. But I overcame my prejudice and read the book, anyway.

And it wasn't that bad at all. I've finished it in two sittings and except for a teeny tiny confusion I was experiencing when lots of characters were in one scene at once, I actually really enjoyed it. The story of Robots taking over the world, killing all humans but one to help them create more of their own kind, is really an easy, nice read. I'll definitely think twice now before making prejudice about Czech authors and plays.

Creator vs creature. Humanity doomed. Diabolus ex machina. Pre-Asimov staff.
All that's nice, but it was weeak.

Read it only for the fab word.
Also Capek's a fav writer of mine anyway.

An incredibly prescient play for 1920 but also highly revealing of the times. Kind of a weird story overall and not honestly *great* by modern standards, but an important piece of science fiction history.
