It's hard to believe this is the author's debut book. She brings the characters to life, each with their own stories, and entwines them into a beautiful tapestry of one story. I enjoyed seeing the growth of the Golem and the Jinni as they move among humans and learn the meaning of being alive, with a great hold onto your seat ending!

This is a hefty but brilliant and magical book. There were revelations that felt absolutely authentic even though I never saw them coming, the hints were exactly what the story needed to feel obvious and still surprised. It's lovely and heartwrenching, a story of evil, power-seeking, and the possibility of becoming better.
