I’d suspected Asimov wouldn’t be my cup of tea, and this being generally considered possibly his best piece of short fiction confirms that suspicion, or at least comes close enough that I have little interest in exploring him further. His inclinations take science fiction in the exact opposite direction of where I find the genre most interesting - his embrace of mankind’s “ascension” via technology as salvation rather than damnation, his focus on large scale shift of social structures rather than the humans caught up in them, a prose style which favors direct expository clarity over emotional impact. All the things he chooses to do he does well, I just find his choices unappealing.

My inner atheist and wild tech-geek heartily approves of this story.
