Credo sia la terza volta che leggo questa breve storia senza ricordamene. Ogni volta mi piace e la valuterei 5 stelle. 10/10 would read it again.

I have to admit I cheated a little, and chose to read this short story because it's the last day of 2015 and I was missing 1 book for my reading challenge.

But "The Last Question" from Isaac Asimov was a short story that I've got recommended from so many different places, that I wanted to read this for some time now.

And sure enough, everyone was right. This is a must read for every Sci-Fi lover out there. Even if you have only the tiniest interest in space and space travel this short story will satisfy you greatly.

It is really mind blowing that Isaac Asimov wrote this in 1956. It would have the same impact if it were published today. A really great and thought provoking story and a great ending to my 2015 reading year.

Reading this made me realize that there is a lot of science fiction that never broaches the subject of religion. That is probably to its detriment.

This is some fantastic short form writing. 12 pages shouldn't make me feel as many things as this did.

5 stars

A short story about entropy and the evolution of man — it’s more captivating than it sounds.

“New stars had been built of the dust between the stars, some by natural processes, some by Man himself, and those were going, too. White dwarfs might yet be crashed together and of the mighty forces so released, new stars built, but only one star for every thousand white dwarfs destroyed, and those would come to an end, too.”

A thought-provoking and intriguing short story that illustrates not only the potential and limitations of the universe and humankind but also the futility of existential dread. No need to have read any of Asimov's other works - in fact, having read so many of his novels I was a bit surprised to see something of his that comes across as poetic and theological. Well worth a quick read and reflection.

See also the companion story, "The Last Answer" (thanks @JP).

Seriously puts the Universe into a new perspective. I don't know what to say other than my mind was blown.
