love this series

This has been a tumultuous series for me as a reader. I LOVED book one and raved continuously about it but then I couldn’t even finish book two and gave up around the 50% mark of the book. Picking up Energized was something I wasn’t even sure I was going to do, but it just called to me the other day and I figured I’d at least try it. I’m so glad I did because I really enjoyed this one and felt the characters were extremely well done.

Hannah never expected her one night stand to end up being her boss a year after the fact, yet here they both are. New to town and looking for her two sisters, Hannah gets a job at a restaurant that just happens to be sitting on the same property her birth mother lived on. But her new boss is Niall, the hot Marine she shared one blistering night with. He doesn’t seem to be happy that she’s there either.

The one night stand who gave him the wrong number is now his employee and Niall knows he can never act on the attraction he still feels. The last thing the wounded soldier needs is a woman who thinks she has psychic powers that allow her to see into someones memories by touching something metal of their. He has enough on his plate trying to save the family restaurant his irresponsible younger brother is driving into the ground.

When Hannah gets a memory of a murder she’s not sure who to turn to. The cops think she’s a suspect and Niall thinks she’s crazy. She finds a kindred spirit in her coworker who sees auras but as things progress and more men turn up murdered Hannah knows she’s going to have to break the case wide open herself.

I adored the characters in Energized so much and thought Behre did an excellent job making everyone relatable and real. Niall and Hannah were an excellent couple. Niall, being a Marine just back from a tour, suffered with some PTSD when put in enclosed spaces. His fuse was a bit short, especially with his little brother, but I loved him all the same. He was adamant that he would not act on his attraction to Hannah for several reasons yet he couldn’t deny the pull she had over him.

I really loved how Hannah refused to back down even when cops were calling her a suspect in the murders she was trying so desperately to solve. Even when her visions scared her and made her physically sick, she didn’t give up. She willingly put herself in danger in order to save people she’d never met. Her quirkiness and snarky personality gave her strength when she needed it and made her vocal and funny. I loved the back and forth teasing between her and Niall even though it was subtle at times as they tried to hide their budding relationship from everyone else.

The mystery was done really well and I was totally surprised as everything is revealed at the end of the book. Though the point of Hannah being in Tidewater was to find her sisters, they really don’t play much of a part in the book making it a good standalone if a reader hasn’t read the previous two.

Inventive and exciting, the perfect mix of genres, Energized needs to be on your reading list!

I give Energized by Mary Behre 4.50 stars!

I really enjoyed meeting the third and final Scott sister. Niall and Hannah were just as awesome as a couple as the couples that came before them. One of the things I love about the Tidewater series is that it has a great cast of secondary characters. We get to see a lot of old and we get a few new as well in ENERGIZED.

The opening chapter of ENERGIZED did a great job of showing the reader how absolutely into each other Niall and Hannah were going to be for the rest of the book. They both develop lot of feelings in a very short amount of time, but because of communication issues, it takes them a long time to realize what the other feels. I found Hannah to be independent, secure in her abilities, and just an overall fun person. Niall was super broody for a lot of the book, but he grows on you as he shows his true self. They were really a great match and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.

I loved the murder mystery of ENERGIZED. I had NO clue who the bad rotten egg was until it was revealed. I was truly SHOCKED and in fact, thought it was someone else. The overall storyline didn't feel over at the end of ENERGIZED so I hope we have another book coming and I really want to see all of the sisters together for an entire book, we didn't get enough of that. Here's to hoping.

4.5 stars - My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: http://witandsin.blogspot.com/2015/07/review-energized-by-mary-behre.html

Energized is a deliciously addictive romantic suspense that will have Tidewater fans old and new reading late into the night. Hannah and Niall’s story is fast-paced and exciting, thanks to Mary Behre’s gift for blending heart-pounding action with a sweet, yet steamy romance.

In Energized, the youngest “crifted” Scott sister finds her way home to Tidewater. After the death of their mother, the three Scott sisters were separated. The youngest, Hannah, grew up with two loving adoptive parents, but she wants to connect with her sisters who she hasn’t seen since she was three. However, it isn’t her sisters Hannah runs into upon reaching Tidewater, but former Marine Niall Graham, the one-night stand Hannah hasn’t been able to get out of her mind. Sparks once again fly between the two, but Niall is determined to keep his emotional distance from Hannah, especially since she doesn’t plan to remain in Tidewater for long. Fate has other plans for the two, and when Hannah has a psychometric vision of a serial killer on the loose, Niall is drawn to protect her. In Energized, the sexual tension is palpable and it was pure pleasure to watch Niall and Hannah’s chemistry practically explode off the page. Though there’s quite a bit of push-pull in their burgeoning relationship, you can’t help but be drawn into the romance. Niall is gruff and not one to let his guard down, but he’s also got a good heart and a protective soul. Hannah brings light into his world, and her innate charm and spirit make her a compelling heroine. Separately and together, Niall and Hannah are fascinating and that’s what makes Energized such an appealing read.

Threading through Energized is the serial killer plot, and Ms. Behre keeps this storyline hopping. I loved watching the dark and twisted puzzle pieces fall into place, and the additional paranormal element of Hannah’s “crift” only served to make the suspense more compelling. Add in multiple family connections and entwining relationships with secondary characters and Energized is a truly “full” book, but one that also manages to be light on its feet.

Energized is the third full-length book in the Tidewater series, but it can be read as a standalone. Past Tidewater heroes and heroines play strong supporting roles, which was a treat, but I must admit the characters who intrigued me the most were the as-yet unmatched security specialists, Ryan and Ian. Here’s hoping Ms. Behre has books in store for them, for I’d love to return to Tidewater. While I wait, I’ll definitely be re-reading Energized, for Hannah and Niall are a compelling pair I’m excited to revisit.

FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I am always a little leery going into a book that is not the start of the series. Energized didn't make you feel like you missed much at all. It's obvious that the sister's stories are before this one, but there are not any spoilers to how they came about.

Hannah's character grabbed me right off. She was fun and sassy. Hannah acknowledges her gift. She tries not to be too intrusive with it, but sometimes things slip through. Like the urge to seduce a certain Marine. She feels his sadness and pain. Plus he's hot as hell. Why not help him out a little? I don't think she planned on the connection the two of them had.

Niall is still dealing with the effects of war and the loss of his friends. He just wants to take some time and lick his wounds. He ends up being the last in the bar being run by a woman who just seems to "get" him. He's leaving town, so what could go wrong just letting her wrap herself around him and help him forget. Of course, he also underestimates the affect they have on each other.

So, how do we not have an HEA right off the bat? Sometimes, men and women just don't think alike. We don't read each other's signals. Each one thinks the other didn't feel the connection and has gone a little cold toward the other. Until they meet up in a little town while Hannah is searching for her sisters.

I love that it was not one of those times where they see each other after so long and just run into each other's arms. Oh no. They have to work to prove each other's reasoning for the separation so many months back. This is all just a complication for Niall as he tries to keep his family's restaurant together. There is a lot of tension between Niall and his brother. They are just so different, and their approaches to bringing the restaurant back to life clash. It doesn't help that Niall is such a tough ass. He comes across as someone you just can't please. This causes a lot of family strife.

Hannah is coming into town just as a serial killer is in town. Despite reservations, she goes to the cops with what her gift is telling her about this killer. As usual, she then becomes a suspect. The way Hannah's gift works, the killer is near her. But who would be capable of those horrific murders. She's new to town and knows hardly anyone, so her clues are pretty hard to pin point.

This murder case was so intriguing. We get views from the killer that just confuse you even more. Between the romance, the reuniting of the sisters and the murder case, I was so drawn in I could hardly put this book down. If this is the type of book I get from Mary Behre, you can bet I am slapping book one and two on my TBR. Energizing was so thrilling and exciting. It was awesome to get pulled so entirely into a story. I can't speak for the whole series, but book three is definitely worth the read!

*To add to the excitement, a novella, Harmonized is on sale for $0.99 at your favorite retailer from January 4 - 31, 2016. This one fits in at #2.5.

Objectively, 4 stars; 3 for my personal reaction

I had very mixed feelings about Energized. There are aspects of it I loved, and it is just as well-written as the other books in the series, but I found parts of it disturbing because of how much it goes into the head of a really sick serial killer. That’s very much a personal reaction; that sort of thing gives me nightmares (literally.) If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, it probably won’t bother you in the least.

I really enjoyed the relationship between the hero and heroine once they met again, though I’m not generally a fan of one-night stands in romance novels (or anywhere else.) I loved Hannah, who has a warm and caring heart and a faith in the general benevolence of “the universe” that I found really appealing. Her psychometric talent fascinated me. Niall is also a compelling character, torn between his attraction to Hannah and his reluctance to let anyone get close to him. He’s clearly dealing with some form of PTSD after his stint in Afghanistan. His relationship with his brother is strained, and Behre explores their feelings and actions well.

Speaking of sibling relationships, I loved that this book finally reunites the three Scott sisters, something the series has been working toward since book one. It was also fun to see the recurring characters again, including Karma and Zig from the novella Harmonized. Karma in particular has an important supporting role in this book. And it’s fun to speculate on who will figure in the next books; Ryan and Ian, two of the McKinnon cousins, are almost certain to get their own books at some point in the near future (and I can’t wait!)

I salute the author for keeping me guessing – or rather, for some well-written misdirection and an intriguing mystery. At times, I was certain I knew who the serial killer was, and then I would start to wonder. There were several twists toward the end, most of which I didn’t see coming. And I definitely *didn’t* spot the murderer!

As I’ve mentioned in a previous review, this series contain a fair amount of blunt language (in terms of swearing), so if that really puts you off, that might be a problem. I will say that it is completely realistic and fits the characters.. The characters are all well-drawn and the plot is exciting, suspenseful, and fast-paced, so it’s definitely worth looking past the language even if you’re a little uncomfortable with it.

Due to my personal aversion to most serial-killer fiction, I’m not sure I’ll read this book again – or when I do, I plan to skip Hannah’s actual visions and rely on my memory for the gist of what they contain, and focus on the relationships, both romantic and familial. But I can’t wait for the next book in the series, and to finding out what’s next for the psychic and investigative denizens of Tidewater.

Rating Note: I gave this 3.5 stars on my blog, and 4 on Amazon because their qualifications are different (3 is just "It was Okay", while on Goodreads it's "I liked it".) My rating is based in part on my emotional reaction to the book. My personal difficulty with serial-killer stories pulled that number down for me a bit, but readers who don’t have the same issues will probably enjoy it more. I hope I’ve conveyed that in the review.
