An enjoyable read.

2.5 stars.

My daughter loves this book with a great love, but I’ve tried it twice now and I just can’t get into it. Not sure what the problem is. I read 3-4 chapters and then flipped over and read the last 50 pages. I guess it’s just not for me.

I wish I could say I loved this for it's connection to Jane Eyre, but that was the last reason I loved it. I mean, I did love it because of that, but I have far better reasons to love it. We have a narrator with true moral complexity. We have a woman who do what is necessary to protect herself and those she loves. We have her willing to dislike parts of herself, but still be able to both love herself and love others. We have her open to accepting others for who they are rather than what they look like or where they come from. On top of that readers get to learn about the Punjab wars between the Sikhs and the East India Company. Complicated morality questions are asked of characters (and the readers) with no answer being given. Oh and there is a mystery, murders, and romance. This may not be for fans of Jane Eyre, but this is for fans of Sherlock Holmes and for those who have a passion for historical fiction from the period.

I loved this book from the very first sentence. This is one of those books you wished you could’ve thought of yourself. It’s Jane Eyre if Jane Eyre had to kill a couple bad guys along the way. Highly recommend to those who love historically fiction but want some edge to it!
