Distressing, infuriating, and bone-chilling. A book that everyone should read.
It's scary how well it, for some parts, resonates with the present. However, it's relieving that today, it seems impossible for people to ever become stupid and languid enough for this Orwellian dystopia to become reality.

Intense. Scary that the future could be portrayed so long ago with such frightening familiarity! Highly recommended.
This is the only book I have ever thrown across a room. Orwell makes his point in the end, but I feel like this would have been more effective as a short story.

1984 starts strong, but the development of Julia’s character destroys the format. Instead of serving as an archetypal member of 1984’s society (like every other character) Julia is developed in a manner that distracts the focus of the book from Winston’s internal and external struggle. This development ultimately has effect on the plot, but at that point the focus and style of the book are scattered and can confused that the reader does not care.
Yes, Orwell’s story is prescient and interesting, but its discounted by the books structural breakdown.

Yay! I finished it!! It was slow, it was somewhat boring, but it had some cool dystopian concepts in it, so I had to give it a 3 star. Will I read it ever again? Probably not. But at least I read it.

Who hasn't heard of 1984? Popularizing the iconic Big Brother is watching you. I've always wanted to read the book and experience it for myself.
Its insightful, if not incredibly blatant, commentary on totalitarian society, how much scrutiny individuals are under, the constant surveillance, the destruction of relationships (child and parent, husband and wife, friends are impossible in this world). Its bleak and tense and stressful which is what makes it so engaging.
Its commentary is what makes the book famous, but honestly I was surprised by how human Winston is. His struggles with connection, his existence as the last of the generation before the party, his rebellion small and dangerous, moved me.
The scene with the hand has genuinely stuck with me months after I read it. We are not human, indeed
You read the book, hoping that things will somehow turn out well for Winston but when you read it, you, like him, know that the story can only end in one way.
