Really good historical fiction. There are two timelines with the same character and her grand daughter. I was most engaged with the past but enjoyed the two viewpoints.

This is almost a 5-star review. I enjoyed this book, especially the historical part of the story. I loved the relationship between the grandmother and granddaughter, and it made me miss my grandmothers. The end was a little abrupt feeling, I'm not sure why.

Engaging, easy read. Lia’s story fell flat, her grandmothers is much more interesting. Entertaining though.

This was a great read! I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were times were I wanted to smack the main characters, times I cried and times I rolled my eyes and balled my fists in frustration. But it was a good read!

A double narrative book about a Japanese war bride and her grand daughter who wad in architect school in Austin Texas, but suddenly dropped out to work in a gift store.

Minnie is s strong swimmer growing up in Japan from 1936 through 1962.  She finds a historic house with turtles, falls in love with a local boy, Akio. He is called to war. Japan is defeated and dhe ends up marrying a man from Texas.

Her daughter slowly unearths her grandmother's backstory, all while wrestling with her own demons that explain why she left s promising career so suddenly.

Often books tell the story of WW II through the lens of Europe. It is refreshing to read the Asian perspective.
