a very delightful read. it really captures the eternal longevity that summer has when you're a child, full of escapades and tiny adventures. sophia and her grandmother have a fond and humorous relationship; i like that her grandmother doesn't talk down to sophia, and yet still plays along or saves sophia from her own feelings, you can really see how much she adores the child. i also like how there are barely any other characters, even sophia's father who lives with them carries on with his life in the background, on mute. he kind of reminds me of the baker from kiki's delivery service. there are lessons to be learned by both sophia and her grandmother about life, and you feel almost honoured to be invited in their little world. the last chapter being called autumn, marking the end of their summer and their departure from the island, is both sad because it's ending, but beautiful because it happened, like all of our favourite memories are.

This book embodies hot summer nights, warm sea breezes, and the bond of family. Young Sophia, her grandmother, and father live in a small house on a small Finnish island. On this island both everything and nothing happens. Told in a series of short stories (some accompanied by precious illustrations) this little book is a true joy. I tried to rush through reading this book, but this is one I will definitely re-read and savor in the future. This is a good camping or vacation book. Read a little at a time and savor it. It's somehow timeless.
I think that if I read this book at a different time, at a different age, I would appreciate it more. I liked it but it didn’t quite connect. Still beautifully written and very peaceful
