While I am waiting for my copy of [b:Discount Armageddon|11402002|Discount Armageddon (InCryptid, #1)|Seanan McGuire|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1317332235s/11402002.jpg|16334571] to arrive, I decided to start reading the short story prequels on Seanan McGuire's website so that I know more about the world that McGuire has created. Easy to follow and get into [b:One Hell of a Ride|13495349|One Hell of a Ride (InCryptid, #0.2)|Seanan McGuire|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1329894733s/13495349.jpg|19037780] did just that. The field notes on the authors website helped too. This is my first Seanan McGuire story as herself. I know her better as [a:Mira Grant|3153776|Mira Grant|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1282493757p2/3153776.jpg] and I love all her work under the pen name. This didn't disappoint me and it's got me excited to start the next short story and Discount Armageddon itself. It's a good intro into this world and Seanan's work.

Jonathan Price and Frances Brown find themselves on a train ride into Hell, which is neither as apocalyptic nor uncommon as you expect.

This short story, which can be found for free at the author's site, picks up shortly after "The Flower of Arizona" leaves off. It continues the new adventures of Jonathan Healy and Frances Brown as they make their way back to the Healy compound. Anyone who has read Discount Armageddon already has a passing knowledge of Frances Brown. Remember the quotes that kicked off each chapter? The ones by Healy/Price ancestors? Yep, Frances Brown is in there, quoted with such winners as "A proper lady should be able to smile pretty, wear sequins like she means it, and kick a man's ass nine ways from Sunday while wearing stiletto heels. If she can't do that much, she's not trying hard enough." She's worth meeting. *wink*

I'm definitely getting more drawn into this world with this next short story. We're still following Jonathan and Fran as they travel back to Michigan after the events of the last novella. There is a whole new monster and a whole new chain of events bringing the two main characters to work side by side again. I enjoyed reading their journey and already anticipate loving the next one even more.

When traveling by train in the company of Jonathan Healy and Frances Brown be prepared to fight some monsters...
Also do not forget to bring some sharp pointy things covered in silver! ;)
p.s. Silver bullets can also do the trick...

jonathan and Fran are on a train headed for Michigan when the train punches through a hole and ends up in a different place. A place inhabited by bloodthirsty imps. This was a fun short story.

One Hell of a Ride is an interesting preview of the InCryptid series. I have not yet read the first book, however, I am intrigued. I enjoyed the characters of Jonathan and Fran. Although I am a tad concerned about the religious element considering the cult-like praying/chanting of the mice (Seriously, religious mice? That makes me sad.) and the demons/hell inclusions. Despite these concerns I still think the series may have potential and I will read the first in the series, hopefully the banter of characters such as Jonathan is a mainstay.

I enjoyed this short story; it's nice getting to read about the ancestors of some of the characters from the main Incryptid novels, the characters were entertaining, there was a new kind of cryptid and a certain amount of mayhem... all I could really wish for was the Aeslin mice getting a little more screentime, because Aeslin mice make everything better.
