Why isn’t everyone talking about this book?? I’m obsessed, this book is sickening. It’s a gothic horror narrated by a HIVEMIND that controls every doctor in the world. It has all my favorite horror elements:
- body horror
- philosophical “what is the self” horror
- medical paranoia (who’s infected? Every detail feels like foreshadowing)
- unsettling nonhuman perspective

Characterization felt a bit forced. Very atmospheric, but I felt still like much more could have been done there. Plot wasn't as deeply weird as I'd hoped it would be, which isn't to say it isn't weird as hell. But you know, if you're going to go there, and you're working with an interesting setting and cast of characters, you might as well all in, yknow?

This book answers the question, what if Tamsyn Muir wrote a gothic horror novel set in a post-apocalyptic society as told by a hivemind symbiote? It's gross, it's cryptic, it's heartbreaking. I fucking loved it.

What an immersive book. I found the ending a bit rushed, but the rest was fantastic. Told from a unique POV, with a fascinating plot, and a post-apocalyptic world that feels more mysterious because we only ever get hints of the weird and vast ecosystem that is behind it all.

I was really enjoying aspects of the story and the audiobook narration by Abigail Thorne is fantastic, but the excessive and unnecessary (imo) anti-fatness kept taking me out of the story. It’s the classic the mean, bigoted, rich white guy is fat and is always described in exaggerated details explicitly depicting his fatness not only as disgusting but symbolic of his internal corruption.

Otherwise it’s a wonderful exploration of identity and a fun take on parasites and body horror with liberal dashes of dark humor.

Such a shame.
