I wouldn't recommend this to my loved ones because it's very dark and tragic, but I was impressed with the quality. I loved the mystical/fairytale elements.

The main character, Saba, learns his father is missing in Tbilisi and reruns to the country of his birth after receiving a cryptic final message from him.  This story is as much a journey of self discovery as it is a journey to uncover the whereabouts of his father.  It definitely highlights how displacement shapes identity as Saba confronts the unresolved traumas of his childhood.

Set in post Soviet Georgia, the story is both atmospheric and emotional.  The city of Tbilisi, recovering from political upheaval and a flood that released zoo animals into the streets, serves as a vivid backdrop for Saba’s quest.

The story does meander a little and veers a bit into fairytale land, but overall,it’s a compelling read featuring suspense, magical realism and politics.

I really really really enjoyed this book. The only reason it isn’t a 5 star read for me is because it’s a bit too gory/violent for my taste. I know that’s very much the point and that it’s forcing readers to take a hard look at a horrifying situation. I fully understand that this book has accomplished exactly what it set out to, but hey these are my ratings and I do what I wanttttttt

A setting I knew nothing about, yet that was brought to such life in this book. I'll admit to personally not being a huge fan of the structure based on Clues no one else gets except the main character, but was wrapped up in the characters, the setting, and the effects of living (hard by) a war-torn area.
