This book completely surprised me!

Confession: I've never read a horror book before - mostly because I'm a scardy cat and thought it would be all gore. It's not! Instead, this book is weird in the best possible way.

The story follows a theater professor whose life is falling apart - her students hate the Shakespeare play she's directing (All's Well That Ends Well), and she's living with excruciating back and leg pain after a devastating fall during her acting career.

At first, I thought this was a deep dive into the bio-psycho-social approach to chronic pain and the mind-body connection. And then... things got wild. I won't spoil it, but let's just say this book takes a turn you won't see coming. If you're into dark, twisty reads with a touch of the bizarre, this one's for you!

all’s well is mona awads portayal of chronic pain, she did wonderfully. i have fibromyalgia which is a chronic condition and i stopped myself more than once after i finished the book to make sense of this realization.
i am miranda. she is me.
it terrifies me, how i understand her pain all too well; however what terrifies me the most is: i wouldn’t doubt twice to take a trick. i. wouldn’t. think. twice.
this book; it’s fine, it’s all well. how could it now be? why would it not be?
But not too much pain, am I right? Not too much, never too much. If it was too much, you wouldn't know what to do with me, would you?

I love the way Mona discusses real life issues in her books. She always adds a sort of magical realism to her works (I have only read 2) you never know what’s real and what’s “magic”. Her writing is so thought provoking, like this book dove into the misogyny of the health industry and the difficulties of living with chronic pain. I don’t wanna talk too much about the actual plot because I think that takes away from her stories and the weirdness that happens. I loved the theater aspects of this as a theater nerd myself. Also the moral questions and such that a brought up in this were spectacular. I highly recommend giving this author a chance.

being that i’m currently in the middle of a flare up, i truly could not have read this at a more perfect time. this book and miranda’s complexity hit so close to home in a way i’ve never been able to put to words.

nearly perfect, but being a theatre technician, there were some technical aspects (specifically with the set design) that just aren’t how things work (and not in a magical realism way). a super nit picky critique from my super niche job.
