All's Well by Mona Awad

dark tense medium-paced

I mean, god. What an enjoyable book! This book was point blank, so much fun and was gripping from beginning to end. It something very important to say about people with chronic pain not being believed by doctors and impacting their relationships in horrible ways, even more painful then the pain. Miranda believes that many people are her enemy and are against her and you can really see that fractured reality as you spend it in her head. More specifically, near the end of the book where she goes to sleep in the ocean.

Were some points shoved in your face? Yeah but that didn’t hinder my enjoyment of this book in any way.

Also, another win for the lesbians!

I didn’t expect to like All’s Well more than Bunny, but I can definitely see how Awad’s writing has developed. I thought the novel was brilliant, especially with the context from reading All’s Well That Ends Well in preparation. Awad’s style entails some hazy scenes,
and quite a rapud ending,
but I was generally enraptured by Miranda’s journey in All’s Well.

Hmm. Odd. But I don’t know enough about All’s Well That Ends Well to dispute this. I will say that I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style. Lots of repetition and also no one says another persons name that often when speaking to them?? “Hello, Miranda! Miranda, are you okay, Miranda? That’s so weird, Miranda. You’re limping, Miranda.” SHUT UP??

I was thrilled by Mona Awad’s ‘Bunny’ so I thought I would be into this one.

Very bizarre, very intriguing storyline! I didn’t know Shakespeare’s ‘All’s Well’ play at all but could still read Awad’s story. It wasn’t my favourite out of her stories, however I was still HOOKED into this Faver/Miranda dynamic and the way in which women’s pain is always belittled and ignored 😳 ‘Maybe it’s all in your brain’ lit a fire under my ass and made me rage 🔥

3.5 out of 5 stars for me on this one 🥹 Thank you!

I appreciate that the author was experimenting with a unique writing style. However, the main character’s neurotic ramblings make it very hard to connect with the story and the rest of the characters. Most of the action of the story feels very removed from the main character, who’s very passive and placid for most of the story. Also, a lot of the details don’t feel fleshed out enough, like the main character’s relationship with her mother.

I did like the Weird Brethren and all their sinister shenanigans. And I was very interested in Ellie and how she would affect the story. Although I wish the author had been more clear on exactly what happens at the end of the story. It ends a little too mysteriously imo.

I devoured Bunny, and devoured All’s Well just the same. An extremely clever book with a challenging main character and witty writing. Captured women’s pain as well as relationships (with oneself and with others) with chronic pain so well. Can’t wait for more Mona Awad books!
