not my favorite book, but it definitely has the historical fiction vibe I really like. It definitely had potential to be something super interesting, but in the end it just felt like a super slow paced story with a lack of exciting events.
A thoroughly charming, skillfully crafted, impressively researched story. I have read next to no romance as a literary genre and must confess I had low expectations, but this book broke down all my biases and I am much more than just "pleasantly surprised" – I am absolutely delighted!
The author deserves special acknowledgement for her deft and nuanced portrayal of so many of the types of difference that occur in people: dyslexia, deafness, alcoholism, gender non-conformity, all sorts of trauma, and various types of mental illness (including misdiagnosed ones).
And I have to dedicate a separate paragraph to my heartfelt appreciation for the effortless, and indeed even sexy, way the author wove explicit consent into every scene of intimacy. Now THAT's the way to do it! (Pun fully intended.)
