I really enjoyed this regency romance: the characters were likeable, the overall plot suffered from the dramatics a little too much but managed to suspend disbelief well and I was definitely entertained throughout.
Did I fall in love with Anthony? Not exactly - I wanted a little more out of his character and I never really got it. But not enough that it took away from my overall enjoyment of the novel.
My main qualm with this book had to with the pacing, specifically the choice to skip ambiguous chunks of time between chapters. It tried to imply the passage of time around what the author deemed irrelevant events which could thusly be bypassed.
Did this work? Yes.
Did I like the execution of it all that much? No, I really didn’t.
But it achieved it's purpose in pushing the plot along succinctly. My issue is that the writing of this novel is so strong, that I question the author’s choice to write this way - I feel like Lowell could’ve found a better alternative to get from Point A to Point B and could have done it justice to boot. It just doesn’t feel like the plot progresses at a consistent pace - which is not to its detriment with respect to how the story is told, I actually think it’s quite effective - but rather a testament to how jarring this style of storytelling can be because it arbitrarily adds these very abrupt pauses between chapters which can throw the reader out of their reading experience.
I will also note that Lucy's commitment to Kate's feminist endeavours left me wanting because she never really seemed all that into it? It was all a little too lacklustre for me.
That being said, it is highly probable that I will be picking up the sequel because I'm ready for Gwen and Kate to potentially get their HEAs and I'm excited to see how it all shakes down.

I didn't feel like there was any chemistry between the main characters, and the writing wasn't great.

I decided to stop reading at the 75% mark. The writing style is absolutely exquisite - stunning visuals, beautiful wording, and a strong voice. However, I found the depiction of alcoholism really distasteful. Addiction was reduced to rebellion that could be fixed by love.
