I'm a huge fan of the author's previous works so of course I jumped on this one, and it didn't disappoint. The Lover is like a traditional fairy tale--dark and shapeshifting, with a conflict between sisters. I felt that the ending was a little rushed, but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of this atmospheric short story.

This was well written and had great atmosphere and worldbuilding for such a short novella, but the character work (especially Judith's motivations) was lacking.
The biggest problem was that it didn't make sense for Judith to want Nathaniel dead. If wolfy-guy was supposed to have corrupted her to the point of murder, it wasn't done obviously enough. Also, Nathaniel really didn't deserve it. Yes, he had an affair, but that's worth killing someone for? Judith was never written as having that much hate in her heart for Nathaniel, so immediately switching on him like that felt really out of character.
