i really enjoyed this, i usually struggle to even feel a tiny bit of interest in stories where characters are cheating on someone but the writing was so beautiful i was completely absorbed.

I really enjoyed this story. The narrator did an awesome job (and when she sang the little folk song, I was impressed by her voice!) and this was a nice, quick story to listen to while I made dinner!
This kind of story isn’t something I would normally read because I find infidelity very stressful (TW for that) but it’s so short and all happened so fast that it didn’t make me feel too icky and sad.
The ending was delightful in my opinion. I’m a bad person!!! I support women!! I’m a girls girl🥰 Judith deserves it and so did Nathaniel. I would love to know what happens next! Does the folk song the vagrant sing become true?
(I definitely missed a lot of symbolism in this story, tbh. There were lots of things that made me think “that means something but idk what”.)

I’m truly obsessed with the cover of this story. I think it’s one of the best covers I’ve seen in a long time and it includes so many little details from the book!! Incredible! That typeface?? I want to know what font it is!! I’m just so in love with it all.

"She'd always known her lover would come from beyond the forest."

Not at all what I was expecting but what a pleasant surprise. A quick under an hour read. A great spin on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale.

Oh! I'd read more of this . . .I'd want to know what would become of Alice now that her husband is gone. And I'd be curious to find out how the last meal sustained the lover. Does he fill out? Can Judith save him? I want more!

Moreno-Garcia works so effectively with dread, even in the short story format. She developed a whole world in just a few pages, filled with cutting details. Characters were interesting even as their choices were frustrating. Story was pretty standard but the language used to tell it was beautiful.

I found The Lover a very intriguing short story. I liked her spin on a fairytale. My only complaint is that it was too short. I'd love to see Moreno-Garcia write with this kind of vibe in a larger piece of work.
