the end was totally unexpected, left me thinking, “what actually just happened there…?” the biggest tragedy is having to wait for the next book 😭 the eastern asian-like setting was delightful! (please forgive me if i’m slightly geographically wrong)

thoughts while reading

p17: almost the same system as the vampire diaries
p43: knife to the throat, slay
p64: a new pov, also slay
p97: flick is becoming a danger to us all
p156: about 12 pints
p158: just like hook wrapping emma’s bandage with his teeth in Once Upon a Time
p173: WHO? i can’t remember
p178: they employ 9yr olds? this really is an oliver twist retelling
p232: intriguing. and
penn arundel
is the who in question
p258: oh dear, they’re probably part of the scientists
p284: that boy is really attracted to her
p287: is arthie a…vampire?
p290: yeah don’t know why i didn’t click onto that earlier, there was plenty of foreshadowing
p296: i swear this is one of the hottest things i’ve read in forever and it’s not even explicit
p298: right, what i don’t get though is how the coconut water actually helps
p301: does jin know?
p320: laith definitely isn’t
the ram
right?
p321: wow did arthie plan this? she must have known something
p335: HUH?

It was fine.  I enjoyed some of the world building but I was taken out of it when there were borrowed cultural terms.  There were some issues with the pacing and character development but it was enough to get the point across.

Enjoyable but kind of muddled? The vampire parts were compelling but the rest wasn’t particularly clear.

dark

what… almost a dnf… the pacing seems so off as well as the writing style, i thought it was translated at first, important details were “explained” in a single sentence.
wth is up with calibore???
romance is pure lust, but no spice, but pretty steamy scenes towards the end.
And speaking of the end… what was that. no spoiler but major cliff hanger.

laith’s whole backstory made absolutely no sense and seemed irrelevant…

also what was with the double/triple crossing between arthie and laith? made no sense to me and it seemed like a cop out

also arthie is a vampire??? the whole book leading up to the reveal didn’t even give hints of arthie being a vampire aside from the coconut water which wasn’t even explained till the very end AFTER you knew arthie was a vampire. and im not just salty about not guessing, it just seemed like an easy gotcha moment that was just theown in there to spice things up…

So now that jin is a vampire, are they gonna turn flick into one to so they can live “happily ever after”??? i feel like the solution is not to turn everyone they love who dies into a vampire because they even criticized a family earlier in the book for doing that exact same thing…

if you have read my rant this far, thank you for your time :D

pretty feminist as well, “girlboss” main character who wears suits!! oh wow, not those awful restricting dresses, the horror!

if you aren’t familiar with books about vampires, as i was not, this was is pretty gruesome and vile in the depictions of drinking blood, and the almost glorification of it imo. so do with that what you will…

no hate to the author or anything, just really not the book for me :)
