HPL does orientalism (more than usual!)

Very similar to At The Mountains in that we get a clearly well researched expedition log at the start then things get pushed out into weirdness and horror. Houdini as narrator is a fun wrinkle and there a moments of genuine horror.

Very silly and very of its time. But Zoe Bee reading it makes it worthwhile. Love Zoe.

I feel like Lovecraft phoned this one in a bit, haha.

What a mess. The style is so wordy that reading becomes a tedious activity. Too much thoughts and descriptions doesn’t captivate me in a horror genre (the true glimpses of which become apparent only at the last few pages).

Not my absolute favorite of his, but this one was well done. I enjoyed the story immensely.

I think that this story features some of Lovecraft's most unique creatures, as, unlike the rest of the mythos, they still have earthly features the protagonist can distinguish. The only negative aspects are the interactions between the protagonist and the gang member as the dialogue is very one-note and boring and the emphasis on the protagonist's skills to escape from tight ropes and contraptions which felt weird and out of place. Learning that this story was ghost-written for Houdini, it somewhat makes sense but I still think it doesn't fit the story at all. Still, it's a very grotesque and horrifying story, classic Lovecraft.
