I’ll review this book by quoting the author: “It’s a pop song. It’s meant to be light and catchy, with three minutes of hooks and choruses for you to sing along with, and then you’re done and you go on with your day, hopefully with a smile on your face.” Mission accomplished, Scalzi.

While not the deepest novel much like the Kaiju movies it draws inspiration from entertaining and fun. The plot twists were predictable but they’re also tropes for a reason.

The characters felt like scientists and I appreciated the attempt to sorta make Kaiju plausible biologically. It was better than most attempts I’ve seen at doing that.

My biggest issue is that jokes didn’t really get a chance to land. Character 1 would say the joke and then character 2 would repeat the joke which made a lot of them less funny to me.

In the author’s note at the end of the book, Scalzi compares the book to a pop song, which, having finished the book makes perfect sense to me. There are things, especially about the kaiju that don’t make complete sense and aren’t fully explained. But for the purpose of the story being told, that is not really needed.

To keep the cast of named characters small, it definitely feels  like Scalzi very deliberately put them in, even if it feels like others would be more likely to there instead. But, again, this isn’t a serious type of story, so I don’t feel put off by this obvious stepping in of the author to orchestrate people’s placement for the story to work.

The main characters are fun and the antagonist characters are fun to hate.

It's a Scalzi book so it's got its usual Scalzi components: competent people, assholes getting called out, an attempt at a narrator of indeterminate gender, funny bits, a lot of dialogue, and lots of exposition happening in the dialogue.

That said, it's a fun romp and adventure. Reads like it would make a killer screen adaptation. Hollywood, please produce this.
