This book knows what it is, and so should you. It’s simple, honest, straight to the point. Don’t expect too much from it, and you’ll be rewarded.
It’s like reading a film. The characters mainly talk. There are annoying, quirky ones… but again don’t expect too much, it’s a fun little book, that won’t let you down.

The thing I liked the most about this book was also the thing I liked the least: It felt like a really good pilot episode of a TV show.

In this book, John Scalzi sets up a really fun world complete with interesting science, fun animals, and lovable characters. However, the conflict doesn't get started until about 75% into the book, and is solved relatively quickly and has relatively few long lasting consequences. However, there are currently no plans for a sequel, so as it stands the book doesn't really do that much.

Scalzi does admit, in his author's note, that this book was never intended to do that much. He talks about writing this book during the pandemic, where he wasn't in the right headspace to write anything ambitious or dark. He describes this novel as a pop-song: fun, catchy, something you can consume quickly and then move on with your life. In Scalzi's words, "we all need a pop song from time to time".

Spot on. Betyder?
