I'll write up my thoughts at a later date.

* * *

I don't have time to write a full review, but these are the notes I wrote immediately after finishing this book:

-like a crappy romance but not crappy
-loved Sky ans LOVED her friendship with Six (wish there were more scenes with them together)
-liked that Sky loved reading and running
-there was never a dull moment where I wanted to put down my kindle and I read it in one day because I needed to find out how the story ended
-a lot of things I didn't see coming and a couple that I did
-probably would have cried at several points if I wasn't reading in public by the pool
-loved the dinner quest game omg, it sounds like so much fun
-all in all a fantastic book and I can't wait to read more from Colleen Hoover
emotional medium-paced

Guessed the ending at the beginning, poorly written but interesting first half, god awful second half, cringy writing and ridiculous teenage cringe

se puede amar tanto a una escritora?
AMO A COLLEEN HOOVER.
No, no. Ella hace algo.

Love love loved the book!! Loved that it just turned and took the book in a whole new direction, was quiet sad when it was over, would so love a follow on. Will be keeping an eye on Colleens books. Can't wait to read more :)

100% one of my fav coho books, omg what a masterpiece!! She did it again. No words. I went in completely blind and loved every second of it

I absolutely love every second of this story with Sky and Dead and this amazing story with incredible quotes too, and the characters too<33 their love is so vulnerable and pure and overall the definition of true, epic, soul shattering love and I love them for it! The way they save each other and his commitment to her is incredible. They are in high school but they go through so much and come out so strong in the end, and I dont wish their experience on anyone

The story and this book is heartbreakingly beautiful and I was 100% in chock when I found out what Sky had gone through! It’s not just the story I love but also deans story and journey! The pain and blame he had to carry all that time!

Everything CoHo writes is incredible! This book deserves so much more hype than it has. Thank god for books and stories and the authors that write them<3

“The sky is always beautiful.Even when it's dark or rainy or cloudy,it's still beautiful to look at....it'll be there no matter what...and I know it'll always be beautiful.”

Love it. The book took three turns at the end where I didn’t think it was going. I can’t wait to read the next one.
dark emotional sad medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Amazing. Fantastic. Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Best book I've read this year! Colleen Hoover DOES NOT disappoint!!!!

The only reason this book gets 4 stars is because of how many times it gave me the ick and made me cringe.

The actual book itself is incredible. I really enjoyed reading this.

*This review was originally posted on book blog Will Read For Feels

A little back story for this review: I’d been feeling a little put out with a lot of the new adult contemporary reads for some time, having DNFed (that is, did not finish) several books in a row. In fact, as I mentioned in our guest post for NAAlley.com, of the books I’ve DNFed in the past year, probably four out five were NA reads.

I took to instant messaging to rant about it, and some friends stopped me in my tracks and told me I needed to get a better sense of the genre first. And to do that, I should read some of the bastions, the top exemplars, of NA. And of course, the first names that came up were Colleen Hoover and Abbi Glines. When Marian heard of my predicament, she immediately recommended I give Hopeless a read—if you’ve seen our podcast on indie writers, you know it’s still one of her top picks. So I queued it up on my TBR list.

Curious as to why this was such an iconic read, I decided I’d give a chapter a read before going to bed that night (or that morning, as it was well on 3AM at the time). One chapter became two. And the next thing I knew, it was dawn, and my husband’s alarm was ringing. And I was on the last chapter. That’s how engrossing I found this novel.

It wasn’t just that there was an abundance of raw feels in this book (which I won’t go into for fear of spoiling anyone who read it). I love the balance of joy and pain, humor and rage, sarcasm and sweetness that Hoover manages to infuse in her characters and their interactions with one another. Yes, like so many NA reads I’ve picked up, the characters have a lot of emotional baggage, but the way in which this book succeeds where many others have failed is that, instead of getting so weighed down by that baggage they end up sprawled on the curb, Hoover’s characters hoist theirs up and keep working their way toward closure.

Beyond that, there was just enough mystery to keep me turning pages, but the pacing was so good and the way the concatenation of emotions just built and built from spark to blazing inferno was pretty darned masterful. There was a scene that resulted in the main character, Sky’s, shattered innocence, and by the end of it, my chest was tight and heavy from the feels. Or maybe it was that I had stopped breathing a few pages back. Either way, that should tell you something.

When I finally got to the end of the novel, I was wrecked. Not because the ending wasn’t satisfying—thank god it was an HEA, because I could not have coped otherwise. But because I felt like the book was just made of feels. If I hadn’t been reading on an e-reader, I would have checked between the pages to make sure it wasn’t bound with blood and tears. It may have been half past six in the morning, but I was just so wired that I couldn’t sleep for another hour or so. If ever there was literary crack, this was it. Is it any wonder this was one of the easiest five-star ratings I’ve given in recent years? Plus, it’s my first ever five-star NA read!
