Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I did not love this collection. I think I don't really like the short story format, especially for sci-fi. Liu is more than capable of massive, slow build exposition, so I was not impressed by half the stories following basically the format of "meet some alien/person/whatever, who explains the history of their world." They are interesting universes that he is creating but I'd prefer to just read a proper story set in one of them.

I might change how I feel about this book once I've sat with it a while.
It's an interesting order to the short stories.
The first several feel almost clinical-- very focused on the plot and the science. Although we're told how characters feel, there's no exploration. It's a very different style of writing.
They cover more emotions and internal thoughts and reactions in later stories.

Some good concepts and stories. As always with this author, there’s a tendency to be overly technical that makes the writing less enjoyable, and the psychology of the characters feels very off. Still enjoyable though!
