Absolutely amazing. As a whole this book has so many mind bending world concepts that my world feels completely opened - with stories of individuals living on barren planets and stories of hibernation, invasion and survival - stories of human perseverance and the greater good, it feels like we're not only living for ourselves but for the human race.

It's really expansive stuff, and I highly recommend this as anyone's first sci fi story collection. Can't wait to read more of Liu's work.

I'm fascinated by some of Cixin's ideas, like the planet Earth converted into a spaceship to escape the soon-to-explode Sun. But every single character is a paper cut out, without an interior life or any real challenges. They are like marionettes doing what the author wants, without doubt or growth. The mechanics, too, bothered me. Cixin has the grand idea, but the minutae of what would really happen say, if a planet went hurtling through space, are of no interest. So the lead story here comes off as a thought experiment -- ultimately without emotion. DNF.

A nice collection of stories although at the end, I was left with a feeling of "sameness". The stories tie into each other in small ways. Unfortunately many of technologies being explored are identical and since the technology seem to be the main drive of many of the stories, I was getting bored by the end.
That said, each story is still great sci-fi on their own and as a European reader, it's an interesting difference to experience Eastern philosophy in sci-fi.

The stories are very hit or miss, with too many misses for my liking. The constant drawn out technical explanations of different technologies can be forgiven in long form stories (like the three body problem) but gets old fast when done repeatedly in short stories.
