Really cool stories, really interesting ideas. However, the sexist tropes and the way women are portrayed/characterised. After reading the Three Body problem trilogy, I can now see that it’s a thing with the author.

I’m generally a fan of short stories but I don’t read them all that often. I think, though, that this collection has made me more interested in seeking them out. I read “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury in my first year of high school and it frequently makes appearances in my thoughts, more so now that the state of the world is so gloomy. That story came to mind while reading “Mountain” and “Sun of China,” in particular, as they all reflect some sort of incandescent visuals and quiet melancholy. It’s interesting that these stories boil down human culture into similar post-apocalyptic terms despite being from different times and places. I can’t decide if it’s more comforting that we may all turn towards the end of times in a similar manner or more horrifying that these stories seem to already be ringing true today.
I read this short story after hearing David Brin reccomend Liu as a "emerging voice in world scifi". To be quick about this review, I agree with Brin. The only thing I felt was lacking about this story was that the translation seemed a little rough in places.
Cixin Liu's skill shines through on every page. This story moves quicky, as a short story spanning 40y or so must, but nothing feels rushed. The stakes escalate quickly both on a personal and on a universe level, and there are no cheap payoffs. Every emotional note feels earned.

“Nunca he visto la noche. Nunca he visto las estrellas.
