Always gonna be a 5/5 for me. This was my FAVORITE book when I was younger and re-reading it as an adult was honestly even better, now that I understood a lot of the deeper & darker themes in the story. It’s so easy to get lost in the world-building and storytelling that make Alagaësia feel so real!

I read this when I was a kid and only recently did I see a TikTok video of a couple reviewing the book series did it take me right back to my first journey with this novel. It was my favourite book when I was younger and I can absolutely see why. It not only shaped my personal writing style but also what I subconsciously look for in regards to setting and how that is described in books. I had this primal need to re-read this series but I couldn't find my original copies so I purchased Eragon as a starting point. I then set myself a goal. As a child, I only owned the first two books; Eragon and Eldest. I never seemed to read past the second book. And as to why that is, has remained a mystery throughout my entire teenage and adult life. So this challenge of mine is to get through Eragon (which was a delight and I am pleased to have the pleasure of re-reading it) and read through Eldest to find out just what it was that I couldn't finish in order to read Brisingr. I would really like to finish the entire series so this will be very exciting. But in short, a very good book. Its simplistic fantasy, which is sometimes what I prefer to high fantasy. You can do so much with so little sometimes.

Did I never rate these books on Goodreads before? For shame, past me. I'm rereading these because I realized that I never read the last two books. (I think. I honestly don't remember either way.) And I heard we're getting a new remix of this. I'm unsure if it will be a tv series on Netflix or what but there's been rumors circulating Twitter so figured now is the time for a re-read!

A blatant kid-friendly version of the lord of the rings that often made me think about the word “plagiarism”... Getting over that statement though, it was a simple enough read but found myself getting confused/lost often with all of the expository lore and names that would arise and then not be brought up again.
This book is 2/3 a hide and seek story that very slowly gets to the meat and potatoes and when it finally does get there, it ends super quickly as to act as a poor cliffhanger for what’s in the next book.

The world that Paolini created is a wondrous yet familiar one that I’m looking forward to exploring more with the rest of the series as there is so much potential. I just hope that the characters are given much more depth!

All of the above being said, when I saw Paolini’s photo at the back of the dust jacket, I was surprised to see how young he looked. So I googled him andddd he started writing the book at the age of 15 and self-published it at 19. That feat/fact alone makes me excited to get into his later books to see how he’s grown as a writer and what he can do with his characters.
