I didn't love this one, not sure why, although I kept getting confused and lost b/c the detail is so in depth that you have to give it 100% of your attention. I don't hate the end, I'm satisfied with this ending. Actually the last 50 pages were the best part. I think the author did a fabulous job of writing this story, but I'm not a war time person. Too much pain, suffering, double agent confusion, and just sad torture. I get why some people loved this, but I didn't, I did like it though.

SO good! SO devastating. I loved the voices of both characters here. It took me a little while to get into this one, but as a reader you discover later why you feel like info isn't adding up and it's lovely.

Amazing book. It was one of the few that I tried my hardest not to read then end when i was halfway through. I didn't quite make it, but I wish I had. Such courage! What a friendship! It is one I will be thinking about for a long time.

This book is beautifully written, somehow managing to be historically accurate without the author emphasizing it (how many have I read that seem to yell out, "Look how accurate I am! Look how much I know about this time period!"?). It takes a great skill to master that artform.
I love the characters; they're so exceptionally real that I want them to be real people. I want to seek out photos of them and hang them on the wall, to be honored as heroes. I love them because they're not perfect, and I wouldn't change a thing about them.
I highly recommend this book. I'll be keeping an eye out for anything else written by Elizabeth Wein.

Burned through this and it burned through me. This will linger with me I think. To think. I picked it up for light fun. My eyes are still wet. It is incredibly well researched. The plotting is so meticulous. The reveals of conceit make you want to go back and read it again. Which no doubt I will. Loved it. As much as any fiction I’ve read in years. “Kiss me Hardy!”

What I loved about this book: strong female characters, a depiction of the important roles that females played during WWII, and a strong female friendship.  Because of those things, I really wanted to love this book, but for some reason, I just liked it.  Maybe it's timing.  I'm busy.  I'm distracted.  My mind is going a million miles a minute with lots of things going on..  So, maybe I wasn't able to get absorbed by the story the way I needed to be.  3/5

Such a gripping book, told in letter format. It was interesting to be listening to two books at the same time (not simultaneously; one at home, one in the car) that dealt with both sides of WWII. The strength, will, and determination of two extraordinary women caught behind enemy lines in two very different circumstances. Such a powerful story. The only thing that frustrated me was that because it was told in letter format, we miss other perspectives, and it isn't until the latter part of the book when we get Maddie's story when it all does come together. Such a tragic yet inspiring story.

Great historical fiction, extraordinary attention to minute detail and sense of place. Loved the differing perspectives in the narrative, and the way Wein kept you guessing about what was going on underneath the story!
