This book was very interesting. I enjoyed the beginning but the farther I got the darker and more gruesome it went. I can understand how this reflects the descent of the mind as a survivor stranded on the ocean will do anything just to live but it was very hard to read. The end is very disturbing and I skimmed over most of the second story Pi tells.

It is truly an interesting book but please be aware of the content warnings and go in expecting some weird, challenging and dark things.

Another note is I did not enjoy or appreciate how this book portrayed religion or Christianity. It seems to be written by someone who has studied religion form the outside but never been apart of it and does not understand it nor believe in God.

Disclaimer: I read this book for school.

My overall experience of this book was underwhelming. Pi's perspective was unique though sometimes contradictory (like why would he say that believing in God is like choosing the better story if he is a highly devoted religious person who truly believes in God? Is he saying that he is only religious because it's a "better story?"). Those thoughts aside, part one was way too long. I get that Pi's knowledge on zookeeping and such aided the story's verisimilitude, but did it really need to be 36 chapters? Part two was weird, and that's all I'll say about that. Part three was by far my favourite. The chaos of the Japanese businessmen and Pi's interactions was everything, and I liked how it all tied together in the end.
I appreciate the ideas and themes that Yann Martel explored throughout this novel, but I guess I'll save those thoughts for my essay...

This book will make you think about a lot of things in life - and question why we tell certain versions of stories. Would absolutely recommend!

I enjoyed parts of this book and some parts even made me chuckle. But overall it was way to gory and graphic for, making me feel nauseous multiple times.
