If Leigh Bardugo and Ali Hazelwood had a book baby, it would be J.L. Vampa’s The Exorcism of Faeries.

This was a fun book to read. Steady pacing, intriguing blend of fantasy and biology, and a deliciously slow burn that is so worth the wait.

I admittedly had very low expectations going into this book, just wanting a palate cleanser after I finished rereading The Legendborn Cycle, but I was very pleasantly surprised with this book.

The premise is so unique and absurd that it captures your attention immediately, and it held it for the remainder of the book. I can confidently say that there were no points during reading this that I was bored, I was thoroughly entertained the whole time.

Without giving too much away, this book follows our two main characters Sonder and Atta during a period in 1990's Ireland where a fictional disease plagues the country. Atta is a post-graduate student who has worked in morgues for most of her life, and Sonder is a professor specialising in morbid anatomy who is a part of a secret society tasked with curing this mysterious plague. Upon working together, the main characters discover that the plague is really no plague at all, but something far more troubling and difficult to eradicate.

I really enjoy Atta's character. She is whip smart and lets you know it, and at 28 years old is older than most romantasy leads, which is very refreshing. I find it admirable that she follows her instincts regardless of how ridiculous they may seem.

The issue I took with this book is that there wasn't enough exploration into the lore and details of this world than I would've hoped.

Other than that, I had a really good time with this book, and would definitely recommend!

The tension is totally there, the foundation is there, the characters are interesting individuals that are likable if not lovable. I definitely avoided this for a bit because I didn’t like the title and it leaned a little too into that.
The ending felt rushed and I have questions…like this should be longer or have a second book.

Loved this book - not only because it is a stand alone  but it is all the things I love in one book!   Gothic vibes, dark, academia, romance and fantasy with a bit of Gore thrown in!

Can’t say enough things about what a great time this was!

I liked the idea of the book! I now want to read more fantasy horror mysteries 😅 But some overall elements as well as the back half felt rushed and left more questions than answers (many revelations not explained, process not shown, etc...). It felt like information was cut to fit in one medium length book. There's a lot of potential with the overall idea- would love for the author to rewrite this and commit to procedural intricacies and horror which would make it a unique academic fantasy thriller.
