I’m sure this may come as a shock but this book is merely okay. I know this is one of the best selling novels of all time but it’s pacing is horrendous. Things that should have been a few pages were overstretched beyond usefulness to develop the plot or the world of Middle-Earth. Then the scenes that should have obviously been expanded. That were so concise you wonder why you wasted a few hours reading a book that literally could have been a Wikipedia plot summary.
Additionally, Bilbo Baggins is a little bitch throughout the whole of the book he never seems to evolve as a character. There are moments where you’re like look at this Bilbo is stepping up, he’s becoming the hero we had hoped he’d become. Then at the climactic battle he pops on his ring and is still the little coward who should have stayed in his hobbit hole.
Finally, throughout the book the narrator has this cute phrase that is along the lines of “Bilbo wished he was back home in his hobbit hole safe and warm. And it wouldn’t be the last time he wished it!” So I thought the book would end with a play on this as it would be a cute callback to an ongoing joke in the novel. Instead, it ends with Bilbo handing Gandalf a tobacco pipe. What a boring end to a pedestrian novel.
I still plan to read the Lord of the Rings trilogy as I find the world that was created to be fascinating, as I do with any fictional world but I do not expect I will rush to pick up the first novel for a bit.
