I think it was a really good read, did take me awhile to read but it was nice to see all the details that was omitted from the movies. The tone is greatly different overall in comparison to the movies.
Very episodic but enjoyable!
P.S. Do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook narrated by Andy Serkis. He is incredible (especially in the chapter with Golem for obvious reasons).

Second read through (at least). I'm giving it a rating of 3.91
I now understand why everybody loves Tolkien. The way he writes(? ... Gosh!
I loved reading this book. Even if it took me a very long time to finish it. I started this book after I saw the second hobbit movie. I want to find out what happen next before the last movie comes out. J. R. R. Tolkien was an amazing writer. This book had me laughing out loud sometimes. Even if I imagined the characters in the book as the characters from the movie. I have to say the movie leaves out a lot from the books. So I can't believe that Thorin, Fili, and Kili dies in or from the battle that happens in chapter eighteen. I through that Thorin would be the king under the mountain. But he died along with his nephews. Which completely shocked me to when is read those parts. I might have cried a little. I like how in the end Thorin finally gotten the Arkenstone. So all in all I loved this book.
This book is definitely definitely from a different time and reads differently than a lot of more modern books. Each chapter is a contained story within the larger journey. Sometimes that can drag as the detail can go from intense then to skipping over major battles. Even so, I’m still glad I managed to make my way through it.
