I really recommend this book, it's short but powerful and nicely written. The language is quite simple, which made it even more personal and touching to me.

It's an autobiography based on hauntingly painful memories of a German family forever marked by a tragic death. Uwe was just 3 years old when his brother died in war as a soldier of the Waffen-SS. He doesn't know who he was, all his knowledge is based on stories told by his family and letters his brother used to send them. It's also unclear to him, how his brother really felt about being part of the SS and his role in it. This is an unspoken enigma that surrounds the family but that Uwe is determined to decipher. All he has is a diary made just out of bullet points that his brother wrote in the months prior to his death. It is only after 60 years, when all members of his family have passed away that Uwe decides to tell his story and talk about what he's discovered.

I really felt for every person in this family, not only Uwe himself but his parents and his sister, each of them coped in their own way with the death of a loving one. This was a reminder of the aftereffects of the war for the families of the victims, the families in the perpetrators' side but also for the not-knowing ones.
