Loved!! Another one of Sally's back catalogue and only one left to go til I've read them all. I am just obsessed with her writing.

Her books keep you guessing the whole way through and are so relatable, I think everyone knows someone who has been through the same or similar in each of Sally's books.

This book had me gripped from page 1 and I couldnt wait to pick it up again each day.

Another brilliant Sally Hepworth read! When your mid-60’s father starts dating someone held his age (the same age as you), while still married to your mother who has Alzheimers 😳😳
.
Without saying any more, and if you’re familiar with Hepworth’s storytelling, you’d know that you’re in for a domestic thriller, with some suspense, complex family relationships and a few twists and turns to keep you on your toes. As always, it’s a quick read and recommend if you enjoy this type of book!

Didn't enjoy this one anywhere near as much as The Mother in law and The Good Sister. It started strong, but it was a bit of a mixed bag, and I didn't like the ending.

Finely-crafted characters that meld into an unforgettable story of family dramas, large and small.

Okay 3.5 rounded up. Miss Sally knows how to write an entertaining thriller! The suspense and humor made this a great read. I wanted a little more from the ending though. But overall a good read!

There are so many books that want you to suspend your disbelief - while overlooking flat characters, draggy plots, contradictions, and terrible writing. This book was not that. Yes you have to suspend some disbelief (increasingly as you careen towards the end), but the author has gifted you with the correct tools: fleshed out characters, juicy plot, in-depth explanations for odd happenings, and seamless writing. This book was a pleasure to read, and while it absolutely does not hold up under scrutiny, I couldn’t put it down until it was finished. I even gave up valuable sleep as an exhausted new mom for this book. So yea, I did like it and give it 3.5-4 stars:)

SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT

I wanted SATISFACTION! I wanted all those poor, abused ladies (including Pam and Fiona) to get together and drink their wine and just talk about how HORRIBLE Steven really was. The ending was slightly underwhelming with that whole “we probably know that he probably was bad” after THEY KILLED HIM LOL

If anyone ever slammed me against a wall and choked me out while looking me in the eyes, you better bet that they could not convince me it didn’t happen. You’re telling me that Heather SET OUT to irritate him, trying to get an abusive response, then he nearly kills her… and all Steven has to do is say, “no I didn’t do that!😇”?!? And she believes him immediately (“oh am I crazy?”). Is he hypnotizing these women? Is he feeding her brain altering medication? And yes, Hepworth has the built in excuse for this particular woman’s weak mindedness: sometimes she had a couple (or one??) drink, and her dad killed her mom. But what was Pam’s excuse? How did she not know that her husband was leaving her with BROKEN BONES and bruises and concussions regularly for thirty+ years?!? She ACTUALLY thought that she was clumsy !?

Furthermore, how did his daughters not have the slightest idea of this rampant abuse? You’re telling me that he never once hurt their mom in front of them, yet on his wedding day in front of his new wife and all his kids and grandkids, he just straight up chokes her out for no reason??? So weird. The book even hinted a lot that we would get a reveal of his daughters being abused, gaslighted, or repressed, yet that never happened.

And then the first instance in which we see it happen, someone just straight up kills him and pretty much shows no remorse and everyone in the room just backs her up and is like “yes he choked her so go off, girlie, bash his brains out”🫢🤪

Anyways this is in no way undermining the fantastic reading experience I had with The Younger Wife, but this might not be Sally Hepworth’s best writing.
