I gave this book ZERO stars. I remember going on reading it thinking this has to have a redeeming ending and it just got worse and worse.

Don't read this book for a pick-me-up. Tragedy after tragedy, the story drags you to the depths of despair with only the slightest bit of redemption at the end. However, this books stirs up a tempest of emotions, plunging the reader into a twisted family mystery where no one is quite sure where they came from and where they might be headed.

I am not in the habit of giving five star ratings to a novel. [b:Fall on Your Knees|5174|Fall on Your Knees|Ann-Marie MacDonald|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1481449709l/5174._SY75_.jpg|941309] by [a:Ann-Marie MacDonald|3515|Ann-Marie MacDonald|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1253837223p2/3515.jpg] was perfection for my tastes. The Piper sisters are so vividly portrayed, with prose that is both generous and intimate, that they are surely etched in my mind and heart until the end of my days. I loved this novel the way I loved The Neapolitan Novels by [a:Elena Ferrante|44085|Elena Ferrante|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1635020942p2/44085.jpg] and [b:Midnight's Children|14836|Midnight's Children|Salman Rushdie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1673724335l/14836._SY75_.jpg|1024288] by [a:Salman Rushdie|3299|Salman Rushdie|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1440718419p2/3299.jpg]—there is a touch of the miraculous in the lives of the characters and this transports the reader to a heightened level of wonder and empathy. It is a long read—over 600 pages—but I savoured each page and stretched out the experience as long as I could. In retrospect, I am glad I waited the 27 years since the book was first published because I doubt I was ready for it until this moment. Very Highly Recommended.

Wow. This book starts off as a live story of two completely different young people but turns tragic. It takes many twists and turns and is at times beautiful and other times horrifying. Such a complex story of a family between love and sin.
