Absolutely adored this! The characters, world-building, and engaging, funny, often hilarious, writing were excellent. The slow-burn romance between Fairhrim and Mordaunt was a beautiful highlight. Some really great chemistry between two intelligent, witty leads and irresistible banter. Loved the slow burn and how their relationship evolved from hate/ loathing and disdain to grudging respect and reluctant attraction. Enemies to lovers at its finest. The intriguing mystery has also left me desperate for the next book. 5 ⭐️

Like many, I come from the fanfic fandom and I was really looking forward to the authors first published works. I’m disappointed to say I’m disappointed that part one of this duology was mostly world building with a hint of insta-lust and love towards the end. I remained interested only because I know what the author can bring to the table. Sadly I must wait another year to read the next.

I enjoyed this book a lot, it was definitely the slow-burn/enemies to lovers I was looking for that ended on such a cliffhanger.
I loved that there was no lusting after each other but rather they noticed aspects of the other character, inciting internal conflict because of how opposite they are. I'm excited to see where this goes in the next book. It's extremely light on the spice but it felt appropriate for the book.
My only issues with the book was the lack of world building and that I needed to look up a handful of words while reading (most likely a me problem).
I have not read the fanfic this came from and don't plan on reading it. I thought it was enjoyable as it's own book and I don't want or have a need to compare the two. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I loved the banter and British humor. Unfortunately, for more than half the book I found myself a bit bored—it felt like a lot of filler without much happening. The ending was more engaging and redeemed the story enough that I’ll be picking up the next book.
