I really appreciate Lacey’s idea with this book and trying to comment on today’s society and the way we view people.
I think Lacey’s writing was great and I found myself wanting to read the story
However , this book was so lacklustre for me I honestly feel like it could’ve easily been a novella.
I just feel like there was no pay off for a story that reads and it almost pushed as being a mystery/thriller ?
I understand the books purpose and I completely appreciate the commentary but for me it’s a 2.5/5 which is a shame as I honestly wanted to love this book.

If Shirley Jackson were writing today, and decided to grapple with identity politics by doing a Southern American take on Kafka, it might be something like Pew: timely and timeless, intellectualy brutal and emotionally generous, like a diamond dagger to your brain and heart.
The guy was talking about how he drowned a black boy when he was a kid and then hanged four black men as an adult and that’s when I knew I would not enjoy this book.
