Did everyone feel this vacillating, animal loneliness after removing clothes? How could I still be in this thing, answering to its endless needs and betrayals? The room was all white and gray and the air was warm and the air hung on me and I hung in this flesh that all those unknown centuries of blood that had brought into being. I had to tend to this flesh as if it were an honest gift, as if it had all been worth it. Why did living feel so invisibly brief and unbearably long at once?
Graphic: Animal death
Moderate: Hate crime, Racism, Religious bigotry
This book is very simple and straightforward while dripping in nuance. I like the way Lacey allows the reader to search for hidden meanings instead of giving them outright.
This definitely feels like a book I would read again to find other insightful nuggets I may have (definitely) missed the first time.

I heard someone say recently "Christianity attracts bad people because it provides cheap forgiveness without accountability" and yeah, this book really drove that point home.
I thought the first half was excellent, but it got repetitive quickly. It either needed to be shorter, or something else needed to happen.
Still an insightful novel and one I think is great for fans of literary fiction with themes of religious trauma.

This was technically a re-read for me but coulda fooled me... I remembered NOTHING.
I enjoyed the ride with this one and annotated so much.
As an ex-vangelical, I really appreciated the themes around the church as a construct and the influence this has on wider society. There were some great through-line reflections on race division and history, lots of super ouchy reflections on trauma and PTSD and many just plain truths about gender, body image and perception.
Sadly the end fell super flat and could have done with at least another 100 pages of explanation and resolution...
After some thought and reflection on the parts that did hold true to me, I decided to go with a 4 out of 5 stars.

If you plan to read this one, make sure you go into it for the experience of the whole book and not hoping for any resolution because you sure as heck won't get it with that ending... and as always, be sure to check CWs
