I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this. I partially attribute my enjoyment levels to the audiobook narrator who was phenomenal. But outside of that, this felt like part historical account, part dramatic retelling. There were a lot of names and figures to track, but the author focuses on a core selection of recurring "characters" and we experience the events primarily from their perspectives. I also liked the use of typical objective observations that were placed alongside the words of the Wager's crew. And the ending tied back to empire, myths of empire and the sheer violence and horror that goes into maintaining the illusion of absolute power and authority. This was a surprising 5-star read and I understand why it is receiving so much attention.
