Before I Met You

Just ok.

This book was good, but could have been a great read with a little more development. Two things specifically: what was the issue or history between the brother and sister? Why bring it up if that storyline never goes anywhere? And second, what changes Betty's mind in the end? She goes from deciding to accept the proposal to refusing it with no explanation. We all know it's the right decision, but how did she get there?

3.75⭐️ I definitely wanted to find out how everything fit together, but too much of Betty’s life as it linked with the pop star. That part has nothing to do with the mystery.

I really enjoyed the mystery part of the novel. I found ridiculous the notion that every man who met Betty fell for her.

Lisa Jewell is a fabulous writer, I really enjoy her books. The only issue with this book for me is the pacing is a little off. The beginning was really good, I was really interested in Betty’s POV, the middle section dragged on in both POVs and I really enjoyed the ending for both Betty and Arlette. The characters were fantastic, I love John’s Sister, it was so nice to see a well described secondary character, who, had a clear personality.

*That Scene*
I have mixed views on the main scene in Arlette POV, it was well written but didn’t really add to the story in anyway. I did feel contrasted well with some of the Dom/Betty scenes, especially, the club scene.

3* for me.

Betty puts her life on hold to take care of her ailing grandmother. When her grandmother dies, a mysterious beneficiary is mentioned in the will and Betty must travel to London to try and track this woman down. As Betty investigates, she learns more about her grandmother's life in London and the sacrifices she made and what she left behind. This had a good mystery with no crime and was just light and sparkling and easy to read.

I figure I'd give this between 3 and 4 stars.
It doesn't have a lot of re-readability for me just given that once you've finished it everything feels resolved and you aren't wishing for more to the story.

That's not a bad thing though. I'm happy with the way the story/stories concluded to an extent. It's sad if anything for Arlette but happy and excited for everyone in the 90's portion.

All in all a nice little escape and message that we all have secrets/we don't know absolutely everything about our family members. Kinda neat.

Not the usual Lisa Jewell story, but a sweet one nonetheless!
