NOTE; I received an e-ARC; I'm just late to the review party.

As always, please be sure to check Content/Trigger Warnings before diving into a book!

A FLAME IN THE NIGHT is a quick and delicious read, boasting rich details, fun characters, and complex emotions!

It felt very much like a story that flows based on the energy of its characters. We get a taste of what's to come from future installments by the delightful Morgan Dante (we need more). In AFITN, there's  exploration of sexuality, reclamation of a sort, vengeance, and the blissful beginnings of a poly relationship (and healing for all). It's filled with equal amounts of fun banter and the heavier stuff that weighs the heart.

Aside from some technical errors and the pacing feeling a bit odd at times, I think Morgan has crafted something marvelous with characters that can't be defined as good or bad, monstrous or otherwise.

There's emotion, passion, love, violence, and more!

I was quite excited to read this book, thought the beginning was cool but then it just... stopped. I admit I'm not super into "spicy books", so maybe this just wasn't the book for me, but I've read fanfiction, I can deal with it.
In general, it just wasn't too nice to read. Sentences were too long and convoluted, I often didn't know who was talking at any given moment. It just took a lot of brain power to read.
The plot is alright I guess. There's just not a lot of it, it's a story that could be told in a couple minutes that feels like it's going both too fast and too slow.
I wish the characters were more developed. By the end of the book, reading the dialague, I felt that it didn't match the idea that I had in my head, and I think if they were given a bit more time to develop this wouldn't be the case.

TLDR; it's not an awful book, the "spice" was original I guess, but I wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends.

Sexy times, a lot of sexy times. Very well written sexy times. *phew*
And while I did love the serious parts plus that they were considering to be vampires, the sexy times just seemed to vanish for a while and it just got a bit too much blabla and I wished Leon would be more honest about his past. I was happy when the sexy times returned. Haha. Much better! The ending was very sweet though, I am happy for the three of them!
Plus, I would have much preferred them thinking about becoming vampires without the added threat of a brother of the pimp Claire murdered visiting. For most of the book I would have given it a 4.5 stars, heck for the sexy times I would have, but the blabla plus the eh reason to vampirism just turned me away.

All the 4 and 5 star reviews genuinely made me doubt that we were reading the same book. This had so many issues, it made me genuinely annoyed that it's being sold at bookstores. I saw a few negative reviews comparing this to fanfiction, and I can see why. I must, however, point out that there's a LOT of better fanfiction than this.

My biggest issue - issue number one if you will - is the fact that this book feels unedited. It feels like it didn't go through an editor. It reads like a first draft that requires a lot of work and guidance. There are paragraphs that consist of one long, wordy sentence. Wrongfully placed colons and semicolons, as well as a full-on chapter titled "Claire" that is told from Léon's perspective. The language is pretentious and too flowery - to the point where it, at times, becomes hard to read (especially for the first two or so chapters). The amount of adjectives used became tiredsome, and some of the more "difficult" words were at times used wrong. Due to all these issues I cannot, in good conscious, give this book anything higher than one star. I feel like future readers need to know what they're getting into, and to know that this isn't on par with the publishing standard.

My secondary issue is... well, the story itself. Without any major spoilers, let's just say that the first 88% of the book (I checked) takes place in 72 hours. The pacing is non-existent and horrible. The plot of this book can be summed up in two sentences, and any real action (aka plot) really only happens in the last 15 pages of the book. The blurp attempted to sell me a queer gothic vampire love story, but all I got was two sex scenes with unnatural dialogues in-between. There is no character growth or depth, and the overarching majority of the story is told in such a one-note state that even the most outragous and interesting parts feel mediocre at best. There's no ups and downs, no peaks or plot-twists. This reads like a story someone wrote over the holidays about their three original characters. The dark, but interesting, backstory is told to us in passing, so the big climax to the revenge plot isn't satisfying in the least. It's this big reclaimation of Claire's worth and self, but we as a reader haven't had the time or need to actually care for either Claire as a person, her trauma or her journey. Because somehow, someway, it's not relevant enough to the "story" for us to actually live through it with her.

This felt like the biggest bait ever, and I am just so glad I didn't spend €20 on a physical copy of the book. No wonder the majority of the 5-star reviews got an ARC gifted o them.
In a fashion similar to the spirit of the book, I'm gonna publish my ramblings without editing them or even reading them through at all.

A very quick, easy sexy read. The vibes were immaculate though the typos took me out at times and I kinda wished it were longer as certain aspects of the story felt rushed. I still had fun with this one though!

There are a lot of things I've enjoyed abkht the book. The setting, Léon is a fantastic MC, the writing. The love story is too fast to make it credible. This book needed to be much longer. Also, revenge stories make me uncomfortable
