How to rate this book? Sadly, Goodreads didn't exist back when I first read it in HS. I was happy to see the story held up on a reread as an adult. It's definitely YA, but the elements that I loved best about this series are the ones that still appeal to me today.
The Night World is not a fluffy, glittering place. It's truly dark and dangerous, and doesn't couch that. You only get hints of it here on a wider scale, but the main rules are pretty clear and the punishment is death for all involved. Secret Vampire in particular also deals with the heavy themes of cancer and mortality (the real live, human version). These are the reasons why I enjoyed reading this book as an adult and look forward to slowly working my way through the rest of the series.
Also, Ash. How can you not love Ash?

This was exactly what I was expecting it to be. I read this back when I was in high school and liked it way better than I thought I would. A little disappointed we never got to read the actual kiss between James and Poppy but it was cute otherwise.
