Read this in the original issues rather than the Trade Paperback. I'm up to Issue 13 now. :)

I bought this about 2 months ago and just got to it, but then I ripped through it. It was a really quick read.

This book follows a set of super-mostly-villainous ladies, I picked it up because my patron saint Poison Ivy is in this crew. While I really enjoyed this story line and want to pick up the next book, I didn't think it was as easy to fall into as Suicide Squad, which I read right before hand, and I felt like I needed to know more going in to the story.

So, Birds of Prey without Oracle is kind of weird, but I'm willing to give it a shot. The team is interesting enough, almost got a Secret Six feeling with the band of misfits thing they've got going on. I like the current story as well with the super-paranoia mind control stuff and trying to figure out who can actually be trusted and who is a sleeper agent and doesn't even know it. I'm hoping future volumes expand on why exactly everyone is on this team.

The deal about this book is that the story is pretty good,it might not be [a:Duane Swierczynski|97136|Duane Swierczynski|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1295200267p2/97136.jpg]'s best but it still pretty good. The art is also fine, nothing spectacular, but certainly up to modern comic standards. The problem is that they really don't support each other. A really good graphic novel needs both art and words to carry the story, and this book doesn't need the art.

It is a fine read, just not a great one.

Having read the “Birds of Prey” in its entirety I found this New 52 series a bit lacking. While Duane Swierczynski’s writing at the start relatively interesting, but found that once you started getting into the third & fourth issues the flow of the story starts to get a bit confusing. I also didn’t care for the team line up. Birds of Prey just isn’t a team without Oracle (Barbara Gordon), with while she makes several appearances as Batgirl, Oracle was more effective as a crime fighter than Barbara ever was as Batgirl. Black Canary is always a solid character, but the backstory of being wanted for murder was only slightly dumber than the costume they put her in & erasing the Black Canary/Green Arrow legacy. Starling? WTF!? Might as well call her Lady Blackhawk without the WWII history & piloting. Guess this was giving Black Canary a friend while introducing the other characters that readers know & a touch of dichotomy. Katana has always been an under-utilised character & is good to see her in a well known book. Finally Poison Ivy seems powered down from what she could do prior to 52. There was no real epilogue to the storyline after 7 issues before launching into issue 8. This was no means the worst of the New 52 titles for me, but they tarnished a solid book.

Fast paced and beautifully drawn action with some interesting badass ladies taking the helm. I'm new to Birds of Prey, so this is definitely making me want to read more of them, especially the older Gail Simone issues. The plot was interesting, but it occasionally became confusing to keep up with the different changes and twists.

It was also confusing why Black Canary would be upset about Poison Ivy almost bludgeoning someone to death, when Poison Ivy is a murdering terrorist - so basically, what did Canary expect? If she didn't want Ivy to kill anyone, she shouldn't have invited her to the party in the first place.

Despite some of the character contradictions, I enjoy the whole team. Katana is an extremely interesting lady, and I look forward to learning more about her. Although I'm still a bit disbelieving that Poison Ivy would be allowed into the team, I hope this can bring some added depth to her. Before she... you know... inevitably betrays them or something. We'll see. Starling is a Queen, and she's probably my favorite of the ladies so far. Black Canary is definitely the leader, and I appreciate that she wants to make a better person of herself and rise above killing.
SpoilerEven if she technically was cool with Katana killing a bunch of peoples, but whatevah.

I'm hoping for Batgirl to be in future issues more often. She brings balance and goodness to a group of four morally ambiguous ladies, and I want the Birds of Prey to be more than just a bunch of action heroes. Character development and transformations are all I seek.

I am looking forward to reading the next issue, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed these issues, despite some of the problems.
