The characters were well written, but I thought the bill would be more about books, publishing but it's actually full of horrors of war, racism, men and women getting raped in the war and often killed, violent murders and the broken system of immigration, bad landlords and dilapidated housing. And throughout is there parasitemia story of bedbugs infestation, and how he itches so hard there's blood and puss and self injury and infections, with in depth descriptions of how many bites are in his such and butt and if they too get infected and lots of bulging big bites, and then termites too.. But mostly he's obsessed with bed bugs
So despite the writing being engaging I can't recommend... I was listening to it or I would've DNF'd the book . Instead I finished it in 3x speed.. had to glaze over the desperados medical and Villeneuve descriptions..I hoped something would come off the story but the plot was weak, it was mostly about the people, their interactions, how they heated each other and how they suffered. There's a kid who looks up to the author and calls him uncle... But otherwise end everyone doubts him.. even his wife mach in Africa thinks he's cheating on her but it seems he's just too busy being eaten by bugs and rejecting manuscripts as he works in publishing and tries to get his own book published while getting into fights and being phone blocked by all the people.. His church, neighbors, friends... So much fighting and war drama and racism.. Very hard story.
