Despite knowing the story somewhat already, found it a gripping read. Will be thinking about what transpired and those involved for a while yet.

I've read this book about five times now since i picked it up from a thrift store some 4-5 years ago. This is the book I throw into my own face everytime my 23 year old ass with a stamina of an 80 year old starts dreaming about climbing the Everest.

a devastatingly incredible account of what happen on everest in 1996. early on in the book they discuss how the bodies on mount everest are ignored as an unspoken rule. by acknowledging these bodies one has to face their own mortality and, as stated in the final chapter, they have to recognize that survival on everest does not boil down to learning from mistakes. at high altitudes one cannot think clearly and can make impaired judgments, no one is exempt from this fate. jon directly challenges this by taking the time to bring attention to the 12 people who died’s humanity. he tells this traumatic event in a moving way to make us realize what it means to be human and how we can go about living after tragic events. this book is incredibly touching.

Will not be climbing Mount Everest.

What gives people the confidence to climb Mount Everest?? Literal delusion.

The beginning of this book was unnecessary but the ending made up for it. I might give this a 4.5 if I did that sort of thing.
