I enjoyed this book! The thrill of adventure and the struggle and grit of survival in a new place and terrain are always hooks for me. I enjoyed the characters and their development throughout the story. There are few female characters, and those that are important in the story are fairly static. Their roles and stereotypes are played out but the main characters (who are male) have a feminist viewpoint which was refreshing, even if it felt a bit like a savior complex. From the main character's point of view, every person deserved respect, no matter who they were or are.
This is a pretty good fantasy novel, wonderful forms of magic and intrigue, it was only a little slow to me and I didn't have a whole lot of motivation to finish it, partly because I have read the series this book is a prequel to, so I generally know how the story "ends". Honestly I would read this again!
