I have a love hate relationship with this book! I loved the plot but hated Chrissie. I think the author really wanted us to feel for her but it’s so hard with everything she does throughout her story line! Awesome read!

The summary makes you think this book is a thriller and I think that's a bit unfair to this book to market it this way and maybe have people read it with different expectations. This is a work of literary fiction about a terrible childhood and about motherhood, it just happens that the main character killed a child when she was eight years old. This fact never made me stop feeling so much for Chrissie.
This is such a well written and delicate and empathetic story I read the last 25% through tears.

Tucker does a fine job getting into this character’s head, but I read The Wasp Factory and that’s as much of this thought process forever.

The book started off very strong with the first line being “I killed a little boy today.”

It took me a while to get into some of the British/european slang of the this book, but once I was used to the dialect I was all in. Truly, I started to feel bad for Chrissie given the fact she’s got a shit mom and honestly, I don’t know that I can even blame her for being a murderer as a young child. I’m sure that last comment will get me put up at the guillotine.

I loved the back and forth POV of childhood and adulthood, however, the ending of the book fell a little bit flat for me. When it comes to reading thrillers/horror, I’m not usually looking for or expecting a happy ending so I was a bit put off by that, though I suppose that’s just personal preference.

Overall, I thought it was a great book!
