This was the definition of OK. I didn't hate reading it, but nothing about it was particularly compelling. The author made some strange choices in the writing and structure of the book (i.e. no Sujin POV, ending the book mid way through the cycle of character POVs, so many odd paragraph breaks, etc.) I thought the general content of the book was interesting, especially since I'm far removed from South Korean culture, but I felt like Cha was trying to cover too many topics. As a debut the writing was solid, but the overall book could have been more tightly edited. The open-ending makes me wary of recommending this but I'd probably pick up Cha's writing again.

This book is unlike anything I've ever read. Nothing happens, but I was on the edge of my seat and thoroughly enjoyed it the whole way through. The characters have all gone through various intense traumas and they just cope and get through day to day life. They way that they interact with each other and with the culture around them is heart-pounding in the worst ways. I want so much for them and their futures. But I also kind of like how I'll never know.

I liked the ending of this book, but overall it felt kind of unfocused. Very little actually happened, things that seemed important would be alluded to and then never brought up again, and one of the viewpoint characters felt unnecessary.

The writing was beautiful in many places and I think the author has some valuable things to say about female friendship and beauty culture in Korea, but I didn't enjoy the actual book as much as I could have.
